The Fachverband für Deutsch als Fremdsprache (fadaf) (Specialist Association for German as a Foreign Language), whose present membership numbers some 650 individuals and institutions active in this field, aims to promote the learning of German, and to foster intercultural contacts. It addresses foreigners interested in German, or who are learning or teaching the language. A comprehensive informative portal offers up-to-date information. Description: The DAAD website pages on Living in Germany offer detailed information for foreign students about everyday life in Germany, for example, on banking, public transport, looking for a place to live or postal and telephone services. The section on Summer Courses provides a search engine for finding the right course from a number of selected summer courses offered by Germanys higher education institutions. You can search courses by location, topic and language of instruction.

TestDaF: standardisierter Test für Deutsch als Fremdsprache

Provider: The TestDaF-Institute is affiliated to the Distance University of Hagen and the Ruhr University Bochum.
Description: Study applicants from abroad generally have to prove that they are sufficiently proficient in the German language to be able to take up a course of higher education study in Germany. TestDaF is the central, standardised Test of German as a Foreign Language (Test für Deutsch als Fremdsprache) modelled on the American Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). It provides foreigners with an opportunity to take the German language test required for admission to higher education in Germany while they are still in their home country. The TestDaF website provides details on the next examination dates, a sample set of examination questions and the addresses of all test centres around the world at which TestDaF can be taken.

Provider: The Goethe-Institut (GI) has been active since January 2001 in its capacity as the largest intermediary organisation in the field of German foreign cultural policy. This new organisation is the result of the merger between the Goethe-Institut and Inter Nationes and is responsible for conveying German language and culture around the world.
Description: The website http://www.goethe.de provides an overview of the work of the Goethe-Institutes, links to all institutes and access to their information services and language courses, both in Germany and around the world. The GI homepage is complemented by various special online services for those learning and teaching German, e.g. distance learning courses and online material. Librarians and publishers/booksellers can find out about the comprehensive range of information which the GI offers (dates of specialist conferences, new publications, and so on).
