Communicate internationally in German

Anyone who speaks German can communicate with 101 million people world-wide. In Europe alone, 100 million people speak German as their mother tongue, not only in Germany, but also in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Knowledge of German is also a help in parts of northern Italy, eastern Belgium, eastern France, and in Holland or Denmark.

The numbers of people learning German have risen world-wide since 1989. According to information supplied by the Goethe-Institut, around 20 to 21 million people were learning German as a foreign language in 1995. In the year 2000, 14,000 schoolchildren sat for German examinations.

This puts German amongst the twelve most commonly spoken languages in the world: 2.1 % of the world population. Within Europe, German is the most widely spoken mother tongue.
