Tradition as business partner

Germany has a strong economy and is an international industrial and trading partner. Germany enjoys good and long-standing business contacts not only with Europe, but also with the markets in Asia and America.

"made in Germany"

Germany is a nation of global export significance. Due to their high quality, German products are on sale all over the world, and have established themselves as a "trade-mark": German makes of car, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, are not the only examples of German craftsmanship ("made in Germany"). Germany´s economic strength is also demonstrated by companies active in international markets, such as BASF, Bayer, Siemens, SAP, Deutsche Bank and many others. Germany leads the world in new environmental technologies and in the use of alternative energies.

Germany as the hub

Germany hosts leading international trade fairs, such as IFA, CeBIT or IAA. With the enlargement of the European Union, Germany has assumed a central position at the very heart of Europe. Germany is at the hub of economic relations within Europe and with the whole world.

Language proficiency - a good investment

Internationality and intercultural competence are key qualifications for successful business today. Language proficiency helps to open up new markets over the globe, and it gives you the edge in competition. Every company with a future is going to invest in foreign language training and language proficiency for its workforce.

German plays an important role in international business contacts:

German is one of the great commercial languages of the European Union and a bridge to the aspiring nations of central and eastern Europe. In the last 10 years, German has become a regional lingua-franca in the countries of central and eastern Europe. The enlargement of the EU is going to create a demand for German-speaking employees in central and eastern Europe. German is the language of the European market, and German is the language which opens up major markets. High investment in countries abroad and a large number of joint ventures between German and foreign companies speak volumes for German as a commercial language. German is in demand for German-speaking firms abroad, for foreign firms in Germany, and for companies enjoying close economic ties to German-speaking countries.
One example: Daimler Chrysler currently employs 383,000 people, half of whom are in Germany, 110,000 in the USA, and 78,000 spread over the rest of the world. With over 100 million German-speakers in the European Union there are interesting opportunities for specialists regarding training, university studies and professions. A knowledge of German promotes professional careers.

DAAD Glossary

Universität

"Universität" means university and is used for research universities (wissenschaftliche Hochschulen) that offer a broad range of subjects (like arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, economics and business administration, law, medicine). These institutions confer doctorates. The strong research focus benefits students in their training. Please note, however, that English texts often use the term "university" generically, i.e. to cover all kinds of higher education institutions, for example, universities of the arts, universities of applied sciences, universities of education, etc.
