German as a Cultural Language
German culture manifests itself in different forms: from literature and music, through the theatre and films, and right on to architecture, Painting, philosophy and art. Cultural life, however, also manifests itself in life-style, the book trade and libraries, in festivals and sport. German book production occupies third place in the international ranking. German media groups operate world-wide, German literature has been rewarded with Nobel Prizes, Grimms Fairy Tales have been translated into numerous languages, German museums are not merely tourist attractions, and German films are able to celebrate international successes. Germany´s cultural heritage has placed its mark on the global image of Germany, and is a symbol whose traditions go back hundreds of years. German is important for the cultural and scientific world. This is illustrated by the numbers of German- winners of the Nobel Prize: 27 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, 15 in Medicine, 22 in Physics, 7 in Literature and 4 Nobel Peace Prizes and 1 in Economic Sciences.
