From my personal experience

"My name is Catherine and I have been learning German for two years in TANDEM with Birgit, my German partner. I had previously studied German on a language course at a university. This was important for the grammar and the systematic learning with a textbook.

A TANDEM partnership works like this: I speak French with Birgit and she speaks German with me. We meet regularly at our TANDEM course at the university, but also privately, and we often communicate per online TANDEM, too, via e-mail or in a chat room. We found each other through the TANDEM course at the university, but there are other TANDEM agencies for finding partners.
Learning languages through TANDEM is ideal for me as I can be flexible in my times, have intensive and personal contact, speak everyday German, and we can correct each other. Of course, Birgit isn´t a teacher, and neither am I, but for TANDEM learning it is speaking which is the most important aspect. With TANDEM learning I also learn a lot about the country, its people, culture and life in Germany."
