From my personal experience

"My name is Sven. I´m learning German on the Internet through an online course. I have my computer at home and can learn German when I have the time and the urge. The online programme has short learning chapters and a tutor to assist me when I run into problems.

For me, learning German on the Internet is good because I can decide for myself what I learn, and when and where I learn it.

I have already attended a German course, which was important as a basis, and also for the pronunciation and for systematic learning using a textbook. Using online learning I can build up my knowledge of German. This is a useful supplement to other programmes as, for example, there are online exercises which run parallel to a textbook or course programme. Online learning has the advantage that I can switch into programmes all over the world. Publishers quite often offer free sampling of internet courses. There are lots of ways of learning German with the aid of a computer."

DAAD Glossary

Fachbereich

"Fachbereich" means department. Universities are made up of various faculties (e.g. School of Medicine, Law Faculty, Faculty of Natural Sciences, etc.). Each faculty is made up of several departments. So, a Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering may be made up of the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. Please note: Some universities choose to call their faculties "Fachbereiche".

Universität

"Universität" means university and is used for research universities (wissenschaftliche Hochschulen) that offer a broad range of subjects (like arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, economics and business administration, law, medicine). These institutions confer doctorates. The strong research focus benefits students in their training. Please note, however, that English texts often use the term "university" generically, i.e. to cover all kinds of higher education institutions, for example, universities of the arts, universities of applied sciences, universities of education, etc.
