The Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD) der KMK, Stufe II, may be gained worldwide at the German schools abroad as well as at foreign - state/public and private sector - education institutions which have been approved as examination schools by the Central Committee on the DSD of the KMK, a body made up of federal government (Bund) and federal state (Länder) representatives.
To qualify for approval, German schools abroad must prove that they offer between 1,200 and 1,600 hours of German language instruction in at least seven consecutive course years, while schools in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have to prove that they offer these hours in at least five consecutive course years; the shorter length comes from the fact that the school system in these countries is structured differently and they generally allocate a higher number of hours to the teaching of German.
The DSD is a national examination, which means that a teacher holding a secondary (II) school teaching qualification in German and/or a modern foreign language is sent from Germany to oversee the examination. The written examination section is corrected and marked centrally in Germany. The language certificate describes the standards of qualified German language skills required for studying in Germany. It serves as proof that the holder has attained the level of German language proficiency which is required for successfully attending a course of higher education study in Germany. Its distinctive status lies in the fact that it serves as the standard setting model for all other German as a foreign language certificates. Their equivalence with the DSD of the KMK has to be reviewed and confirmed by the KMK. The DSD of the KMK can currently be taken in 50 countries.
