Institutes in Germany

A large number of private and state institutes and schools offer German courses both in Germany and abroad.

The Goethe-Institut (GI) offers language courses and examinations for German as a foreign language at 16 institutes in Germany and 127 cultural centres in 78 countries abroad:

German universities offer a varied and valuable range of summer language courses. The DAAD publishes a data base for these international summer course on its website. The current brochure "Sommerkurse in Deutschland" may be obtained free of charge, complete with its CD-ROM, from the DAAD in Bonn, DAAD branch offices, the DAAD information bureaus and the DAAD lecturers lectors in foreign universities:

DAAD Glossary

Einschreibung

"Einschreibung" and "Immatrikulation" mean registration or matriculation at a university. To register, students have to go to the registrar's office or the student registration office, often known in German as "Studierendensekretariat". They generally have to present their Admissions or Acceptance Letter (Zulassungsbescheid) and their Higher Education Entrance Qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung), generally a school-leaving certificate, like the Abitur or Fachhochschulreife. They also have to pay a registration fee.
