Provider: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is an association of higher education institutions and student bodies in the Federal Republic of Germany. The DAAD promotes international academic exchange and acts as an intermediary organisation in the field of foreign cultural, science and education policy as well as in the field of education cooperation with the countries of the Third World. The DAAD is the “national agency” for the EU’s SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme and an advisory centre for the LEONARDO DA VINCI and TEMPUS programmes. It also operates the German Secretariat of the IAESTE programme on the exchange of students for technical experience (practical training).
Description: The DAAD homepage provides information for German and foreign students, graduates and doctorates/PhD holders on the range of study opportunities available in Germany and abroad. The news service “Online-Magazin” provides an interesting insight into the activities of the DAAD, its scholarship holders and alumni. Foreigners can search the scholarship database for scholarship programmes which suit their respective profile.

Provider: The DFG is the central public funding organisation for academic research (higher education institutions and publicly-funded research institutes) in Germany.
Description: The DFG promotes and supports academics and scientists who not only temporarily have their place of residence and employment in the Federal Republic of Germany. For example, the DFG awards research grants or material/equipment grants for the completion of fixed-topic or fixed-term research projects. The DFG sites offer extensive information on all programmes and makes all leaflets, guidelines and forms available for downloading (PDF-, RTF- und Postscript-Formats).

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung)

Provider: The AvH enables highly-qualified foreign doctorates/PhD holders to come to Germany to complete a long-term research project.
Description: The AvH website describes all the programmes offered by the AvH in detail and provides an opportunity to download the application forms in three different formats. The latest news on the work of the AvH can be found in the new online magazine “Humboldt Kosmos”. The detailed “Guide on a Stay in Germany” for visiting scientists is also new, offering plenty of tips, for example, on finding a place to live, buying a car and other everyday problems. The Guide can be found in the “Fellowships and Awards” section under the heading of “Support in Germany”. The services of the AvH are complemented by a list of Humboldt Clubs, which also serve as contact points for advising new research fellows before they leave to complete their stay in Germany.

Provider: InWEnt is an organization for international human resources development, advanced training and dialogue. It was established through a merger of Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. and the German Foundation for International Development (DSE).
Description: The website provides a search engine with which users can call up all the programmes offered by InWEnt. These are presented in detail with information on the application process. A follow-up contact forum additionally allows former programme participants to exchange their respective experiences.

Provider: The FES focuses its work on development cooperation, international dialogue, political education, economic and social policy plus historical research and study promotion.
Description: The FES holds more than 3,000 political education seminars in Germany every year. A database allows specific searches to be made for FES publications covering various topic areas which can then also be ordered online free of charge. Additionally, the website offers a search engine for web-based sites covering political topics (extensive collection of links to sites which provide political information). International students and graduates can also apply for the various scholarship programmes offered by the FES.

Provider: The KAS promotes talented and gifted people, engages in historical research, offers political education and is active in the field of political research and consultancy. The KAS foundation operates worldwide in the fields of international policy and development cooperation.
Description: Besides providing information on international cooperation and local and European politics, this website also offers a search engine for finding various publications and speeches. The latter can be accessed in audio and visual formats. The KAS promotes studies by foreigners at research universities in the Federal Republic of Germany. Foreigners already studying or completing a doctorate in Germany can only apply in the Federal Republic of Germany, while foreigners still living in their home country apply to the respective KAS regional office responsible for their home country. Further details and application forms can be requested by e-mail or post.
