Research Funding ''Made in Germany''

Many German organisations support foreign scientists and researchers by awarding scholarships, fellowships and prizes. The key funding organisations are the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Numerous other organisations also exist besides these three.

  • The DFG is the central self-governing organisation of science and research and is responsible for funding research at higher education institutions and at publicly-financed research institutes in Germany. The DFG has an annual budget of around 1.3 billion euros and funds more than 20,000 research projects each year.

  • Every year, the AvH enables more than 1,800 academics and scientists from all around the world to come to Germany to complete research stays. Together with some 100 Humboldt Associations in 60 countries, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation maintains a network of 23,000 Humboldtians, including 35 Nobel Laureates.

  • The DAAD is one of the world's largest and most respected intermediary organisations. The DAAD promotes the international relations of Germany's higher education institutions by funding the exchange of students and scholars and by running international programmes and projects. In 2003, the DAAD funded in total around 30,000 students, academics, researchers and scientists world-wide.
