In the beginning there was America: 1925 - 2000
The "Akademischer Austauschdienst e.V." (Academic Exchange Service) is founded in Heidelberg on 1 January. The student Carl Joachim Friedrich provides the initiative for this move when he succeeds in acquiring scholarships from the New York Institute of International Education (IIE) for 13 German students reading social and political sciences. Exchange activities focus at first on German-US student exchange in these subjects. Today the DAAD defines its assignments in various ways:
Science
need worldwide cooperation plus international competition between methods, schools, ideas and knowledge.
Culture
need cross-border dialogue, cosmopolitan attitudes, tolerance towards others, coupled with an open mind towards unfamiliar values.
Business
need young, internationally-qualified staff as well as partners throughout the world whose personal experience allows them to fully appreciate products and services.
Politics
must endeavour to secure peace by promoting understanding and communication.
All these goals and interests are served by the worldwide exchange of up-and-coming young executives and experts. For 75 years now, the central concern pursued by the DAAD has been to promote this exchange in word and deed, by means of financial support and political action.
