The first step was taken in summer 1999 when Ilse Müller made her generous donation. A European by conviction, she explained her enthusiasm for donating as follows: "I would like to contribute to international understanding in Europe." The former translator associates this scholarship closely with her own life history.

Ilse Müller and DAAD Secretary-General, Christian Bode, sign the Endowment Agreement
Born in Lower Siliesia, Ilse Müller left this region when the Germans were expelled after the Second World War and began a moving and varied career in West Germany. Since then, says the old lady, Europe has been her home. Out of solidarity with her region of origin, she would initially like to have the Ilse-Müller-Endowment-Scholarship used to provide a young Pole with an opportunity to read German studies for one semester at a German higher education institution.

Ilse Müller herself speaks three foreign languages and calls Italian her favourite language. She worked as a translator for Europe from the late 1950s onwards, initially translating for the European Coal and Steel Community in Luxembourg, then for Euratom in Brussels, and finally for the European Union.

Ilse Müller's endowment laid the foundations of support for many young students, including those from other parts and regions of the world. Indeed, every endowment is invested and its returns fund future scholarships of varying duration. Naturally, several donors can choose to join forces, for example, to fund a one-semester scholarship (DM 6,000 for students, DM 8,000 for graduates), a university summer course (DM 2,500), or a one-year stay in Germany (DM 20,000 for students, 25,000 for graduates).

Where their wishes coincide with the DAAD support programme, patrons of the DAAD may specify the specialist field and the nationality of the scholarship holders they support. A scholarship holder will then be chosen from among the applicants who all have to successfully pass the usual DAAD selection process before they can benefit from the private donation. If both parties are interested, donor and recipient can also meet each other. And of course, once their support comes to the end of its term, these scholarship holders, just like all other DAAD scholarship holders, become part of the global network of DAAD alumni.

Further information is available from DAAD head office under the heading of "DAAD-Stiftung", Kennedyallee 50, D-53175 Bonn, Germany.

The DAAD-Stiftung is recognised as a charitable, non-profit making organisation, meaning that annual donations of up to 10% of the income level (a minimum of DM 40,000.--) are tax deductible. Inheritance tax is waived when the donation is made in the form of a legacy (testamentary gift).
