Government Scholarship Programmes of the DAAD

Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan
Government scholarship programmes were agreed with Uzbekistan und Kyrgyzstan last year. The agreement for Uzbekistan was signed by a foundation of the national bank, the Umid-Foundation, while for Kyrgyzstan it was signed by the Commission for Education and Science, which reports direct to the President of the Republic. Both programmes have commenced operations.
Mongolia
An agreement on Mongolian government scholarships was signed with the DAAD on the occasion of the visit by the Mongolian Education Minister to Bonn in September 1997. The programme aims to enable 50 students from Mongolia, financed by their government, to gain a Magister degree at one of Germany's higher education institutions within a maximum of six semesters. The DAAD arranges the study places and supports the students in their language preparation.
Indonesia
Using World Bank funding, the Indonesian government intends to send IKIP (college of education) lecturers to Germany to gain further professional qualifications (doctorates/PhDs). This programme is part of the process of upgrading the IKIPs into universities. The 29 candidates who have already been selected will receive language training in Jakarta and Germany to prepare them for their doctoral studies, which will last for up to four years. The language training part of the programme will be funded by the DAAD. The agreement will be signed shortly.
